Wednesday Wonders #3

The Pets Get in on the Fun

Grace, Haley, Kaya, Kirsten, Lanie, Lea, Melody, 2 or more

In this installment of Wednesday Wonders we chose another book to represent; however, not a cover, but a scene from the story.

In The Cat Who Could Read Backwards Lilian Jackson Braun introduces us to a reporter who is trying to get back on his feet.

Qwill is assigned to the features department. Specifically the art beat.

He is paired with a fussy critic who has a stunning Siamese cat named Kao K'o Kung who reads the the newspaper headlines from right to left.
Backwards.

There are 29 installments in this cozy mystery series.

Koko and Yum Yum are the best.

The last few aren't quite as good as the first 20, but since she was in her 90s when those were published we don't mind too much.

Anyway, here is Rascal as Kao K'o Kung reading the headline from right to left.

Xyra's Notes

  • Great cozy mystery series.
  • Murders are not too gory, no adult scenes, no profanity.
  • First few are set in the 1960s so Qwill can seem a bit chauvinistic, but he's not. And you have to understand she accurately describes life as it used to be.
  • You do have to let go of a bit of reality because by the end of the series Koko and Yum Yum would be over 40 and Qwill pushing 100. :-D
  • Lots of fun vocabulary words; Qwill inspires dictionary use.
  • Great to read with a nice cup of tea.
  • Love this series. I have every one and most are hardback. The ones from the 90s and 00s I picked up at the time of release; I found the earlier ones in the bargain book section. A few are in paperback and I have at least one omnibus.
  • The Cat Who Had 14 Tails is a short story collection; very good, but you may need tissues. A couple of the stories are worked into the mystery series.
  • Other side compilations about Moose county and the cats can be skipped; they are filled with passages from the mysteries not new material.
  • The cookbook is pretty cool!

Do you have an author whose books you pick up on or close to release date? If yes, who is it?

Best wishes,

  1. Just read The Cat Who Went Into The Closet and The Cat Who Dropped a Bombshell. I enjoyed both!
