Book Review: Secret #1

The Name of This Book is Secret

by Pseudonymous Bosch

Even though you aren't supposed to judge a book by it's cover, sometimes it is the cover that gets your attention. That's the case with this one. Let's see what everyone thought.

Melody

Took some getting used to - all that secrecy. Then, of course, the narrator wasn't always keeping a tight secret. The main characters were really nice people to get to know; unique - not your average everyday main characters. In fact, both deal with bullying in their own way. Finding each other was good for them.

The idea that some people see in smells is very interesting. The box Cass and Max-Ernest find is really cool. If I came across something called the Symphony of Smells I'm not certain I'd check it out as closely as they did. Not everything smells pleasing, you know.

Kirsten

Cass and Max-Ernest to the rescue. Although, this rescue is not like other books where the main characters do everything themselves. A very interesting twist.

Lanie

A real page turner. I could hardly stop reading this story. I wanted to know what was going to happen next. Especially with Max-Ernest and Cass; a lot to overcome. Plus I loved the illustrations.

Haley

This was a really good book. The end is closed enough you wouldn't have to read on, but open enough that if you really liked it you could. There is a really dark section that kind of freaked me out though. Not sure I want to continue if certain characters come back; this ends in such a way I personally can believe they won't and be happy. I did really like the chapter heading page illustrations.

Grace and Lea

The others read this book back in November; we're catching up. The cover catches your attention. The blurb does too. Who doesn't want to be in on a secret? Some secrets are cool; others can be sinister. This secret holds a little bit of both.
And I'm new to this book reviewing thing. The first thing that caught my eye was the bold cover. It's kind of hard to read the title though. Like Lanie, I had a hard time putting this book down. Even though the narrator sometimes got on my nerves. Stick to Max-Ernest and Cass please; and the adults that help them.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This was a very interesting book and I hesitate to tell you more because it might put you in danger. Well, at least the narrator of the story thinks it will. :-D

A unique mystery adventure for younger readers - the main characters are eleven years old. Both are unique in that they are outsiders in their school - friendly, but outsiders due to their individuality. Cass has a physical uniqueness that she tries to hide and is a survivalist. Max-Ernest, well, he talks a lot. The two are brought together by one event and they become friends working on a mystery and rescuing another.

One of the great parts about this book is the introduction of the idea of people who see the world differently - with all their senses at once.

The villain is collecting such individuals and using them for purposes one can only call creepy. So there is also an element of the paranormal.

Note: this is book one in a series. The ending is relatively open. I wouldn't have to read on, but could.

A really good read.

  1. I remember my nephew reading this book, many moons ago. He totally loved it though!

You will have to get the "Time Warp Trio" books if you haven't read those yet, similar kind of fun.

  2. Several of my students really enjoyed this series too - plus the second book in the second series is out now too. I think the self-aware narrator is an interesting take too. Thanks for sharing with #KidLitBlogHop!
