Coolspring October 2020

Autumn in Pennsylvania

Hello!  How are you doing this autumn?  We hope you are doing well.  If you're a regular reader you know this is the time of year we head to Coolspring Pennsylvania and the Coolspring Power Museum. You might be thinking, "Just where is Coolspring?"  Well, it is in the western part of the state, west of State College, east of Pittsburgh, north of Punxsutawney, and south of Brookville.  If you look at a map, search for I-80 and then route 36.

So last week we packed up the truck and headed out.  The icky part is at this time of year we leave in the dark.  But when we hit a spot in the state where the sun was out...just wow! The foliage was outstanding!

The first thing we did was to transform this great spot into home for a few days.

After the big tent...

We put up my tent. And that's when we realized we forgot to pack a few things.  A rubber mallet and my tent stakes.

It was a lot of fun setting up the tents.  We really took our time. Then it was time to find dinner.

The sunset was gorgeous!

That night we watched work on one engine.

The next morning was bright and sunny, but also windy. And I realized I forgot my brush.  Luckily, my braid didn't get too messy.

Xyra and I searched the field for some tent stakes for my tent.

We were successful.

The museum grounds are gorgeous!

Friday was much colder.  I was glad I packed lots of layers, my hat, and mittens...since I forgot my...heavy jacket.

Saturday morning the grounds were covered in a heavy frost.  When the sun came out a lot of the leaves dropped.  Reminded us of that scene from Monty Python.

Professor M explained...

...that the frost makes the water in the leaves expand and that the little stem seems like it is still attached to the tree,

but when the sun hits it and the frost burns off the leaf is no longer actually attached to the tree so it falls.

I missed the Windy City.

Suddenly it was Sunday and time to pack up and go home.

It was fun to get away for a bit, but it was also good to get home.  I missed my sisters.

Have you been able to make any road trips?  If yes, where did you go?  If not, have you done anything to shake up the day to day at home?

Thank you for stopping!  Best wishes!  Stay safe and well!

  1. Dear Xyra, I do remember that you travel to the Museum each year. It sounds like you really had fun and the weather cooperated.

I have been sticking close to home. I do take imaginary trips from time to time by finding tours online.

My Doll Club has been meeting on Zoom. That's fun.
