Grace Heads West II

Hi! I had hoped to post over the weekend, but there is something wrong with the computer at home and I couldn't download any photos from the camera. So Xyra took the camera with her to work and downloaded them onto a thumb drive for me. Yay!

What to Do in Carson City?

You know, a lot of times the people who live in a place are so used to everyday life in their town they miss the special things and events. Gramma Enne and Opa Hans asked what we might want to do during our visit.
Since we weren't sure about the weather, we went searching and found the Carson City Visitors' Bureau site. It listed the current events. One that caught our eye was the Great Basin Native Artists exhibit. We definitely wanted to see that.

The Carson City Visitors' Bureau is in a great location on the corner of Carson and Washington Streets.

It's a little bit north of the capitol building, next to the Nevada State Museum.

As soon as you enter you can sign the guest book and get all the information on the artists. We were greeted by a really great guy named James. He gave us the general layout of the office and exhibit and answered any questions we had. It was nice chatting with him.

There were so many neat things to look at. Can you tell what these are?
They're teapots!
The middle one represents a steam tractor.

This singing cats sculpture is fun!
You can contact this artist for more information on the work on display.

I love this little set.
This gallery card was displayed near it.

Above one of the information racks was a grouping of art. The Live Free piece is by Topah Spoonhunter and is silkscreen on skateboard.
Yep, a skateboard was repurposed. So cool! It's perfectly placed with the other art. Oh, no! I'm so very sorry, we have this beautiful list of the art on display, but we didn't mark all. This is terrible! Please forgive us!

As I try to pair the more obvious ones on the list I've noticed we seem to be drawn to the work of Topah Spoonhunter, Ben Aleck, and Melissa Melero-Moose. The one to the left of Live Free is by Melissa Melero-Moose and the one on the upper right is by Topaz Jones.

This is by Topah Spoonhunter.
It grabbed our attention right away because Enne and Hans play cards a lot! It's called Rebel Kings. Very striking.

This is too and it reminded us of Nana Kestrel, even though it is a caribou and not a moose.
The proverb is thought provoking. You can find reproductions of these from Two Dogs and A Bear.

I think both of these are Ben Aleck.
I'm partial to the eagle, but Xyra was transfixed by Stone Mother above it.

This one is by Jack Malotte. I think it's the one called Ground Hog Sandwiches, but I'm not 100% sure of the title.
I love the layered images. So many to focus on.

This one is really cool too. More of Melissa's work.

In the center of the room you can relax and read information about Carson City and the state of Nevada as well as the exhibit and the First Nation endeavors.
You can also purchase some neat souvenirs. Xyra picked up a lapel pin.

Xyra's Notes

  • Again, I am so very sorry to the artwork that is not represented correctly in our post. Everything was stunning and well done. We linked up artist information, please read about these talented people.
  • Most of the work on display is for sale. If you love something please contact the artist or visitors' bureau for more information. You know the rules, my photos fall under copyright protection so don't copy mine to get to theirs. 😊

Until tomorrow...a bientôt!

Grace Heads West

Early to Bed...

Early to Rise

Hi! I finally have my photos organized. At least the ones from the phone gallery and am ready to talk about our trip west to see Gramma Enne and Opa Hans. They live in Carson City, Nevada. That's Neh-vă-dă..like apple...not Neh-vah-dah. Anyway, last Thursday Xyra and I got up at 3 AM to get ready to leave. Xyra wanted to leave at 3:30, but it was closer to 3:45 when we pulled out of the driveway and headed to Philly.

We got to the airport and our gate with enough time to get a pastry. Right by the gate is an Au Bon Pain. Gotta love a 5 AM chocolate croissant! We found a great seat by the window so we could watch our plane.

It was warm in the airport so I took off my jacket. It was fun to watch the people get ready to board.
We were in B group.

We still found a nice window seat.

The sun was rising as we taxied and took off.

It's fun to watch the topography below the plane! Here we are going over the Rockies! Check out that snow. Looks like marshmallow creme to me.

Here we are coming into Las Vegas.
It's hard to see in this photo, but if you find the road just above my head and follow toward the curve to the island you'll see Hoover Dam!

Touching down in Vegas. Now we need to find our gate for the next leg of our trip up to Reno.

After a long hike! Man, we deplaned in one terminal and had to go all the way over to the end of another! Thankfully, once we got there we could grab something to eat from Einstein Bagel. Whole wheat bagel with smoked salmon shmear. YUM!
I wanted a milk, but airport prices! Wow! It was $3.19 for a PINT. At home we don't pay that much for a half gallon. So I stuck with the water we had from Philly.

While Xyra charged her phone and the nook, I watched the outside crew stock our plane. Love this truck.
I wonder what kind of snacks we will get this time. Earlier we had Fritos and Oreos. Great breakfast, right? (giggles)

Another awesome window seat and we are on our way to Reno!

Check out the snow on the Sierras!

If you are ever through Reno International, they have a cool play space where the terminals connect.

I loved stretching my legs here. Then we headed out to find Gramma Enne and Opa Hans.

Arrival! Yay!

This is Morissa. She's very pretty and nice, but you have to let her come to you.
Her sister, Gracie,...not named after me (giggles), is resting on top of the sofa.

After a long travel day it was good to hit the hay. I'm glad I listened to Mel and packed our heavier jammies.
It gets cold overnight in the desert; even inside. (giggles)

Have you ever flown anywhere? If yes, what was your favorite destination?

A bientôt!

Travel Update

Many Thanks

Hi! Well, Stella certainly rocked our travel plans. Xyra and I were waiting at our gate in the Reno airport when she got a text stating the flight from Denver to Philly was cancelled. We went right away to the ticket counter and got re-ticketed for another day...Wednesday. Then we called Gramma Enne and Opa Hans. They had been to the Bed, Bath, and Beyond in Reno and we hoped they were still there, but they weren't. We went outside to wait for them to head back to Carson City.
We are very thankful for all the prayers and well wishes for our safe travel. You helped us stay safe.

Yesterday we left Carson City and made it to Philly by 11pm; almost 15 minutes earlier than expected.

Then the next adventure began...uncovering the car and digging out. Xyra had thought she wouldn't need help, but gave up around 12:20 AM and called the dispatch hut for assistance. We were on the road by 12:45 after the guys used the right tools to break the icy snow around our tires. We pulled into our home driveway at 1:30 and got cleaned up and went to bed.  Still really tired though, so if any of the friends we met out in Carson City are checking in, please keep checking. We'll start trip posting tomorrow. 😊

Thank you again for all your prayers!

A bientôt! 💖

Travel Issues?

Hi! We're having a great time out here in Carson City and I can't wait to tell you more about our trip. Today we met one of Xyra's sorority sisters for brunch at Ma and Pa's. Manda was awesome to talk with, we have a lot in common.
Anyway, while there we found out there is some winter weather heading toward PA late Monday into Tuesday and Wednesday. So if you would be so kind, please say a few prayers to have the storms hold off until Tuesday and for our plane to arrive safely and our commute home to be uneventful, we'd greatly appreciate it!

Thank you! Much love!

Ready to Go Sort Of

Packed Plus

Hi! So I am packed and ready. Xyra has a few odds and ends to tie up, but I think we are both ready to go. While we're gone, my sisters will be reading the next book for Say Hello To My Little Friends book group, Meet Kit. Xyra and I read it before the trip, now the others can pass it along.
Have you read the pre-BeForever Meet Kit book? If not, i think you can find it at your local library.

Friday Snow

My turn to quickly pop in. Do you remember Friday when we had the snow squalls? Well, the snow did not stick where we were, but when we got home the ground was white. Not covered, but definitely white.

That's all for now! Have a great time the rest of the week and over the weekend! We'll be back and writing soon!

A bientôt! Tchau! Até mais tarde!
