My Turn!
Such a great day spent with Xyra at the Goschenhoppen Folk Festival. not only did I learn more about churning butter, but I also got to see some really neat Pennsylvania Dutch traditions. The Goschenhoppen Historians host a folk festival that demonstrates home skills and trades as our ancestors would have accomplished during the 17th and 18th Centuries.
First we set up the butter demonstration.
Then it was early enough to walk around and visit the other demonstrators. This is chow chow.
Then we passed the peddler's wares on the way to chicken pot pie.

If you need a snack, you can get some fresh roasted peanuts.
Across the road are the 18th century home skills, trades, and the encampment.
In the 18th century house kitchen they were making chicken and waffles.
Yummy! Peach ice cream...not ready yet, but ready to spin that bowl.
Here they prepare stuffed pig stomach. I know it kind of sounds icky, but the stomach is cleaned out then stuffed with potatoes and sausage and other tasty things then roasted. It's tasty.
I met the schoolmaster and learned to do a little fraktur.
The wood carver had wonderful items. Can you spot the butter press? I love the spotted horse.
Check out the large kitchen fireplace in the Antes House. Nana Kestrel is head of the demonstration there.

Band boxes were popular as keepsakes and storage.
You could make your own tow doll. Our Linny is safe at home.
I'm not exactly sure what kind of lumber work was being done her.
The parade is always at three.
Oh, the animals were wonderful!
And we finally got some chicken pot pie! Super yummy!
Have you ever attended a folk festival where they demonstrate the skills and trades of our ancestors? This one is always the second weekend in August. We were thankful the weather was pleasant. I have to admit wearing the clothes of our ancestors makes me very happy for our modern outfits.

Grandma Enne here. Wonderful to see all that the folk festival has to offer. Xyra has been a volunteer for probably 40 years and has enjoyed most every minute. The smells and sounds of the festival are wonderful. Thanks for a great post.

DeleteThat looks very interesting! There is a Civil War encampment every year near here, it's fun to watch them do the different demonstrations.
