Book Review: Happy Hollisters #1

Happy Hollisters #1

Grace, Haley, Kaya, Kirsten, Lanie, Lea, Melody, two or more

The Happy Hollisters

by Andrew E. Svenson as Jerry West
Illustrations by Helen S. Hamilton

I've called you all here today to discuss the book Lea picked out at the library.
(giggles) Maybe I should have called the meeting.
Everyone has finished reading it, right?
(all nod)
So what are your thoughts?
You know, I thought they were way too happy about the move.
And the loss of their belongings.
But it was an adventure. (giggles)
Was it ever!
The characters, I think Pete and Pam are our age. Ricky and Holly are pretty close. I could imagine hanging out with them.
I bet their mom makes great iced tea, lemonade, and cookies. (giggles)
The picnic supper sounded good!
Yeah!
Okay, so my favorite part, all the great secret passageways in the new house! I mean, it was scary how some stranger could get in unnoticed, but how much fun would those be on a rainy day?
I know, right!
I liked how they found the different clues to the mystery guy and found their stolen possessions at the same time.
Yeah, they all worked together finding clues and when there stuff started turning up in town.
I noticed the story followed the standard mystery plot line, but the words were straightforward. I didn't have to look anything up. I didn't add to my personal vocabulary, but I didn't stumble either.
Yeah, I bet this series is geared toward readers just getting into chapter books or moving from what is considered a chapter book today to a longer novel.
Makes sense when you consider the ages of the main characters.
Oh, speaking of characters...what did you think of Joey Brill?
Ugh! Hmpf! Nasty! Mean!
I kind of wonder why he is so mean?
Dude, when he took White Nose in that basket! I'm glad she scratched him!
You bet!
I wonder if he stays like this throughout the series or if something happens so they can all be friends?
You know, the illustrations gave the story more life.
Simple, but detailed at the same time.
It sounds like everyone enjoyed the book.
Yeah. Mmm-hmm, You bet. Good read.
So do you think we will borrow the rest of the series from the library?
I think so.
Would be easy to find.
I can show you the right shelf. (giggles)

Xyra's Review

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
If you enjoy reading the Boxcar Children, Nancy Drew, or other similar series you should like The Happy Hollisters. The series was written in the 1950s.

The Hollisters are happy. They are the good people who are kind to all and immediately contrite during mishaps. They look out for each other and others, even giving the annoying kid some second chances (or at least try to be ready for anything he dishes out).

During their move to a new house one of the moving vans gets hijacked and the contents disappear. At the new house, a stranger keeps lurking looking for a supposed treasure. Three mysteries for the young sleuths to solve. Pete, Pam, Ricky, Holly, and even little Sue do their best to help dad at the store, mom around the house, and themselves in the new neighborhood. They quickly make friends and start putting pieces of the puzzles together.

Overall, the Hollisters are always pleasant and happy. However, Pete loses his temper a few times with regards to the local bully. [Actually, considering how Joey tried to teach his cat a "lesson" for running off, I would have too.]

A very easy, fun read. I love reading vintage books. You get a glimpse at what style was popular during the time as well as a tiny sliver of life. In this case, a happy life.

I would suggest The Happy Hollisters for readers getting into chapter books. The version I have is nice with a few two color illustrations sprinkled through the story. Very enjoyable.

Grace's Manic Monday

Anxiety Happens

Grace, Haley, Kaya, Kirsten, Lanie, Lea, Melody, 2 or more

(six of the crew laughing and playing in the living room; Grace enters clearly frustrated.)
ARGH! I can't believe you people! I'm freaking out about this trip and your sitting here pushing a 16th century monk around in a modern car!
Time traveling Martin Luther. (giggles)
Gets to see the impact of his 95 theses after 500 years. (giggles)
Mr. and Mrs. Playm are taking him on a tour of the local Lutheran churches. (giggles)
Hey, I think he should try driving.
I bet he fits better behind the wheel than in the back seat. (laughing)
Mrs. even has to sit sideways. (laughing)
UGH!
Hey, Grace, what's really bugging you?
I don't know what to pack and I want to look nice for Gamma Enne and Opa Hans. Everyone knows you're her favorite.
Yes, that's true...but don't forget you share your name with great grammy, her mom, and she loved her dearly.
True.
I know you'll have a good time.
But leaving Bonbon is so hard.
Yeah, I know that. Just know we're here to take care of her.
(sighs)
(hugs Grace) Don't worry. We all have some travel anxiety. It will go away once you're on the road and off on exciting new adventures.
I suppose.
Lets go get you packed.

Do you get anxious before a big trip? What is your favorite way to ease away from the anxiety?

Upcoming Events

Yes, you read the above correctly. Grace and Xyra are headed west to visit Gramma Enne and Opa Hans. There will not be a post on Thursday or next Monday. Might not be one on Friday either. We'll bring you the new adventures as soon as possible; stay tuned! 😊

A bientôt! Best wishes!

The Build: March 2017+

Building and Celebrations!

What to Build?

Finding unique ways to rebuild our monthly calendar is getting challenging. We've had a house theme since October or November last year and I guess we had cabin fever, even though the weather has been more spring than winter. So we decided to do something with this kit, Lego 40236.
It's the Valentine set. We didn't use a lot of the pieces.
Then we decided on another split calendar and Voilà!
We liked the idea of a park with cherry blossoms!
The birds are singing. The couple brought their dog and are having tea. The fountain is bubbling. Blue sky. My favorite part is the hedgehog heading over to join the bunnies.
Can you see our friends hiding in the tree?
I think this is my favorite so far.

Weather, Wow!

Yikes! I'm glad I brought the jacket I did! Didn't realize we were going to have a snow squall.
Of course, it could change soon. Still happy to have a warm coat with a hood.
[Xyra note: 10 minutes later the snow stopped, the sun came out, nothing stuck to the ground. Still cold and windy.]

Celebration Day!

Nonna introduced us to a great holiday! In Japan it is Hina-Matsuri or Hinamatsuri, Doll Festival or Girl Festival day.
On behalf of everyone here at Tea Time with Melody Q we wish you a very happy Hina-Matsuri!

You can find some great information and festival crafts - treats, books, and dolls - on Nonna's blog Mommy's Doll Club. We also found a few good links; check them out:

Our Dolls

Xyra and I decided to make paper dolls of ourselves using the Disney Yourself site. it's pretty cool. What do you think of our creations?

Tchau! Até mais tarde!

Tea Review: Bigelow Constant Comment

Thirsty Thursday #17

Bigelow: Constant Comment

Hi! How are you today? All is well here, but boy is it windy! A perfect day for a hot cup of tea. Last week Lanie told you about an orange spice herbal we found at Target. The other day Nana Kestrel gave us a box of Bigelow Constant Comment which is another type of orange spice tea you can find easily in your local grocery store.
Each bag is in a foil pouch like this one. The front tells you the name of the blend.
The back gives the steeping instructions and ingredients with other details. It is a black tea blend so it has caffeine.

As soon as you open the pouch a strong, fragrant aroma hits you.
Very citrusy. Only a two minute steep for this one.
[timer beeping]
Wow! I barely stepped away! Two minutes is a short steep time!
The tea has a lovely, deep amber color...and that same citrus aroma with a bit of zing.
If you're a regular reader, you know our first sip is plain; no sugar, no milk. (giggles) And if this is your first stop with us...now you know. (giggles)
It's nice. Warming. Spicy, but not peppery. Kind of sweet. I think if you over steep it could get bitter quickly.

Today for the sweetened second sip I'm adding bamboo honey.
Oooo, this is wonderful. The honey amps up the sweetness a bit without being too sweet and it takes some of the edge off.

Xyra was certain this is the tea she had one time that curdled when she added milk. So I'm switching to a smaller cup.
It didn't curdle at all! But the milk is out of place. Like a clarinet in a hardware store.
If you like orange spice in a black tea blend, give Bigelow Constant Comment a try. It's very comforting on a windy, wintry day.

Xyra's Notes

  • I have never been a huge fan of Constant Comment tea. I can't put into words why; it just never appealed to me. However, if it was the only tea available I'd partake. Visiting the Bigelow page for this review yielded interesting results. Yes, the basic information was there, but the reviews! Wow! A lot of long time Constant Comment drinkers are saying the blend has changed. I can not tell for certain if it has, but I know I have and I really enjoyed this blend.
  • The one tea bag steeped nicely for my travel mug.
  • Don't over steep; it will get bitter.

Have a great Thursday!
