Coolspring October 2018: Day 3

Coolspring Power Museum

Daily Routine

I do apologize if you stopped by yesterday to find no new post. I had a lot of homework and just couldn't work in my regular post. I'm ready to pick up where I left off. We promised some new shots and this is one of them. It's a spot off limits to visitors. Ooooo! 😈😲

Sneak Peek: The Bunkhouse

Xyra likes to tell me about her first visits to the museum. They would camp like we do now, but there were no permanent facilities, just port-o-potties with hand washing stations. Can you imagine? Now the museum has a great set of restrooms and showers for overnight visitors to use. However, many of the volunteers stay in "the bunkhouse." Professor M told me the bunkhouse was built in the 1800s. It's a great little house.
We come up to use the bathroom for showers and brushing teeth.
The kitchen is not completely modern. (giggles) The stove is from the early 1900s. Think American Girl Kit.
I found another online it's circa 1929. Xyra used it to cook up mac 'n' cheese for one of the volunteer dinners.

This is an early refrigerator.
Unlike the stove, it does not work. (giggles) It's funny looking with the compressor on top.

Touring the Grounds

Behind the Friends Exhibition Hall is another building housing an 80 hp Type 10 Bessemer engine. It was used to compress air to run steam engines that pumped an oil well.
It has a great sound...like a bass drum.
I stopped on the steps to look out at the field. Friday morning it was still filled.
While walking through the field I found a visitor with a really cool doll house. I know that's not what they would call it, but it's an engine display in 1:12 scale, so...

And this small red engine. I didn't ask if it was a running model of an engine or an actual engine.
Either way it was fun to watch.

That's it for day 3. I hope you are enjoying my adventures. Days 4 and 5 to come!

Come again soon!

Coolspring October 2018: Day 2

Coolspring Power Museum

The morning dawned crisp, cold, and windy! We ate breakfast quickly so the food would still be warm. But you should have seen the syrup! If you've ever heard the phrase, "Slow as molasses in January," well, that was the syrup. Really thick and really slow! (giggles)

We got the text saying Flo was in Brookville and headed to the truck. Then it got tricky! We grabbed this, that, and the other thing...then Xyra spilled her tea! Had to clean that up. When we got the text saying they were parked near the antique store we really hustled!

Friends Arrive

Walking toward the antique store we spotted the car.
Hi!
Cassie! Yay! Great to see you! I love your sweater and hat!
Thanks! Your sweater looks cozy.
Yeah, I'm really glad I packed it.

After greeting each other we started the walk back to the main entrance of the museum. We arrived before Xyra and Flo did. (giggles)
There wasn't much of interest for us in the flea market section so we headed over to the ice cream stand. Cassie and Flo got chocolate. Xyra and I did half maple nut half chocolate. The maple nut name is kind of deceiving. It's made with Grape Nuts cereal which is wheat and barley; no nuts.

Hanging in the FEH

Eating ice cream outside on a cold, windy day is, well, it's not prime. So we decided to hop the shuttle to Friends Exhibit Hall. There is a heater in that building. Definitely the best place to exchange goodies. (giggles)
I love this Star Wars model with the storm troopers!

Hey, I have an idea! Why don't we play Yahtzee?! Have to try out this game you gave us.
Love it!
(rolls dice) Sixes!
(rolls two more times) I'm going 24 in three of a kind.

My turn. (rolls dice)
Sixes! (laughing)

(rolls two more times) 27 in four of a kind, nice!
[Xyra aside: the rolls above were strictly random rolls of the dice-no staging.]
Cassie ended up winning the first game and I won the second.

More Snacks

Up at the FEH not only will you find heat, but also refreshments. So we had some candy and popcorn.

Engine Time

Let's check out the engines.
Friends or FEH is loaded with engines. Most are really big to us but still small compared to the Snow.

Then we walked down to Power Tech Annex and I got to show Cassie Franz's Mogul Junior. It's a bit more our size, but still too big. (giggles)
You use the crank to get it to start. When you start to turn it over you can feel if there is compression or not.
Neat.
By then we were cold again so off to Windy City!

It's always fun to walk around the museum and see so many pieces of history still running and kept in working condition!

Such a beautiful fall day. Unfortunately it was time to say goodbye.
It was great seeing you!
Yeah! Loved hanging out!
Tell the others we say hello! (winks)
(giggles)
Will do! Bye, Tatlo!
Safe travels!

Day two closed much colder than day one. Oh, here is a short video Xyra took of the Windy City.

Hope you come back to see what happened on Day Three!

Come again soon!

Coolspring October 2018: Day 1

Coolspring Power Museum

October 2018 Fall Expo and Swap Meet

Hi! Kaya here! Guess you can tell it was my turn to head out to northwestern Pennsylvania. (giggles) especially if you follow our Facebook page. then you got a few sneak peeks while I was there. Anyway, this post will be the shortest of the bunch. Not a lot happened and the weather was being annoying. We left super early in the morning and saw the sunrise while driving the turnpike.
Our first stop was the Wawa at the exit for I-80. Then it was non-stop to St. Marys. Oh, cool! If you click that link and look at "landmarks" the Bucksgahuda and Western is mentioned!
At the B&W Franz worked on the little Brookeville locomotive. Grace let me use her photo as a reminder.

Then we headed to Coolspring and the Coolspring Power Museum with a stop at Sheetz to pick up lunch. It was around 4 and raining when we arrived and the weather wasn't cooperating. So Xyra asked Franz and one of the other Power Tech building guys to help with the tent. She got it finished just in time to head up the hill for some wonderful cheeseburger soup.

Xyra made sure we had lights.
Franz made sure we had heat...added a space heater this fall and it was well appreciated, but more on that later.

I promise the next few posts will be more exciting with lots of great photos of, and this is key, different places and activities at the museum! Tomorrow I report on our visit from and with Say Hello to My Little Friends.

Come again soon!

Monday Monday

The Monday-ist Monday

Yep, I think I have a "case of the Mondays." (giggles) I need to go find some flair to help put some sparkle on today.
I hope that when we talk about the weather you understand we aren't complaining, but making observations. While sometimes we wish it were different, we go along with what we have.
So last week we had fal-ummer. Over the weekend we went from fall to fal-inter. And today they told us it was to be 70, clearing in the afternoon, and humid; didn't get that at all. I mean, really, I'm wearing socks! Ugh! (giggles)
It's a day to curl up in the rocker with a good book and a cup of tea. right, Rascal? Oh, Tutu, you need to stay there.
Oof! (giggles) or hop up here.
So while I rock with the kitties I wanted to let you know it's Coolspring week. Kaya promises to give you some new sights in her report. And if you follow our Facebook page you'll get sneak peaks Wednesday through Sunday.
Hope you have a wonderful Monday and rest of the week. Stay comfy!

Best wishes,
