Coolspring June 2018: Day 3

Coolspring Power Musuem

June 2018 Expo and Flea Market

Old and New Friends

Friday at the museum is always a big day! The biggest crowds especially if the weather is nice. This year it was nice; no rain since Wednesday. Yay! A perfect day to greet visitors.

After breakfast and housekeeping, Xyra and I hopped the shuttle to the top of the hill then walked to the General Store to get ice for the cooler. We had a text from Flo that she was on her way from Brookville and waited for her to arrive. Good thing we have a great tote to keep the ice solid; it was getting warm that day. Soon her car came around the corner and parked. That's when I met Mimi!

Hi, I'm Melody! Welcome to Coolspring! How was the drive?
I'm Mimi; nice to meet you. Not bad; we listened to great music the entire way.
Great! That's the best! Follow me this way to the museum.
Lead on.

The first thing we did was to put the ice in the cooler. Then headed to the field to scout the flea market. We saw a stove that was cool and well priced, but we both have stoves, so...we headed for some shade by Memorial Hall. A small bird inspired to move for fear of...well, what do you fear from birds overhead? (giggles)

Our path took us to the ice cream stand.

How's the vanilla?
Tasty. What do you have, again?
Maple nut. It's made with grape nuts cereal.
Oh, no! They just put up a new flavor...chocolate chip mint. I love that flavor!
You'll just have to come back again to try it. (laughing)

Of course, I glanced away for our picture. UGH!

We stayed there for a bit then headed over to Sudlow Station. Yes, more photos there. (giggles) It was nice and cool.

Welcome to Sudlow Station.
This is neat. So big.

Small compared to some of the others.
This is the pump.

All these engines...it's amazing to think of what they would power. Everything from farm equipment to oil fields and more!
I know, right?!

We supervised this exhibit for a bit. Quite a few people stopped in to see it. But then it was time for Mimi and Flo to head home. So we walked up the hill. Our last stop for the day was Friends Exhibition Hall.

Here you can get the museum shuttle outside and rest inside. Picnic tables surrounded by engines offer a place to sit and drinks and snacks.
I love the centerpieces on the tables.
What's that supposed to be?
You know, I'm not sure, but it's fun to watch. (giggles)

You need to take a few Tootsie Rolls for the ride home.
Yum!

It was sad to see them go, but nice to get together. In-person visits twice a year are cool. We text and email other times.

After seeing Mimi and Flo off we went back to the Power Tech Annex and saw Master Taylor was there! So much fun to see him. It was a short visit with him because he left just before the memorial service for Kim. The service was nice.

After dinner a group started working on a Viking engine.

The night was beautiful.

Thank you for stopping by for day three. Please comment with your favorite photo. Stop back tomorrow for day four.

Best wishes,

Coolspring June 2018: Day 2

Coolspring Power Museum

June 2018 Expo and Flea Market

A STEM Experience

Hello! I'm so glad you are joining me today! Today I'll try to add a little history into my tour. What kind of history? Well, grab your favorite beverage and read more to find out.

Wandering the Grounds
After a wonderful breakfast from the guys at Villella's Meats and a little housekeeping...did you know its always good to tidy up the tent and make up your bed when camping?
First, it keeps the smells down when you move all the dirty laundry. Second, it keeps your bed cozy. In our area, with the humidity and temperature changes, making your bed or closing your sleeping bag keeps it from getting damp.

Anyway, after taking care of those chores I went down to Sudlow Station.
I love this exhibit! here's where the history comes in.
So you see the sign above the door? Sudlow Station was part of the Buckeye Pipe Line Co. The pipe line had many stations like this. Let's take a peak inside.
Maybe a different angle will show more. (giggles) Yes! So here you can see the set up a bit better. The engine, pump, and workbench.

The engine is a Parmaco engine. The name is kind of an abbreviation - you know like instead of saying Stone Temple Pilots people call the band STP. Well, Parmaco stands for Parkersburg Machine Company in West Virginia. There are very few still remaining and Coolspring has two! This one and Professor M's up in the Power Tech Annex.

It is a Hvid, pronounced veed. That means the fuel injection system is very similar to a diesel fuel system. I can't explain this at all, but you can read Paul Harvey's article in The Flywheel.

Size wise it is a 9hp or horsepower. Horsepower is a measurement for engine output that equals the power needed to lift 550 pounds per foot in one second.  1hp equals 745.7 watts. You know watts, like a lightbulb or electrical unit. This one is 9hp which equals 6711.3 watts. The big Snow engine is 600hp that's 447,420 watts. Whoa!

Anyway, here you can see the engine has a belt connected to another piece of equipment.
That is the Parmaco pump. Together the engine would run the pump and the pump moved oil from an area nearby called a "lease" to a larger station which would then transfer it along the pipeline.

The amount pumped depended on the speed of the engine. They had stations similar to this along the pipeline helping transport the oil.

Next!
After spending some time in Sudlow, I headed back up to The Windy City.
The Balisdell is fun to watch and the operator is really, really cool! He's become a good friend. Even asked if I was coming to the show this year! (giggles)

The Windy City is an air lease. An air compressing plant. You can read more about it by clicking the links.

Then it was over to check on the Hornsby-Ackaroyd.
I'm so happy it was running. It's a staple in the Power Tech building.

Back to the Power Tech Annex. Here is a look at Franz's Thermoil 7UA. It's also a Hvid.

Such a gorgeous day!
The first day open to the public came to a close with a potluck dinner up at Friends Exhibition Hall. Where a funny tee shirt was presented to one of the volunteers.
If you don't get it, that's okay; I had to have Xyra explain it to me.

Then back to Sudlow.

That's all for day two. Please come back for day three.

Best wishes,

Coolspring June 2018: Day 1

Coolspring Power Museum

June 2018 Expo and Flea Market

Hi! Last week was AWESOME! It's been two and a half YEARS since I visited Coolspring Power Museum - boy, oh, boy - have there been changes! So last Monday and Tuesday we were baking, cleaning, and packing in preparation for the June show. It's nerve wrecking and fun at the same time. The anticipation...wow!

Wednesday morning the three of us loaded into the truck and headed out to northwestern PA. Coolspring Power Museum is found in Coolspring, PA north of Punxsutawney - home of Phil - and south of Brookville. And if you are interested in STEM this is a place you should visit. One of the largest collections of internal combustion engines with 95% live displays! You can see them in action.

The whole way out it rained. Well, sometimes it drizzled and other times it really rained. The great part was the rain stopped before we reached the Brookville exit. It was still overcast for a bit. Our first stop was the General Store for ice. Then we headed to the museum grounds.

Woo hoo! I'm back!

And the sun came out! (giggles)

After saying hello to a couple of people Xyra and I set up housekeeping.

Not sure if you can see it, but Xyra and Franz's air mattress has an issue. (giggles) Some of the inner channels burst creating a big lump.
Too funny! they're getting a new mattress for October.

My area was easy to set up. I brought both sleeping bags. Not sure how cool it would get at night.

Dinner was with a small group of volunteers. It rained really hard for a bit. We took shelter in a pavilion and building down near Sudlow Station. In fact, we got a text from Flo asking if all was well - there was a tornado warning out, but south of us.

After dinner we headed over to the Power Tech building Annex. Franz worked on a 7 hp Themoil UA engine.

Outside you could see the steam rising from the woods as the sky cleared and the sun started to set. Super neat.

Here's a better look.

Well, that's all for today - our Wednesday at Coolspring. Hope you enjoyed it. There will be more tomorrow.

Do you ever go tent camping? What is your favorite part? If not, would you want to?

Best wishes,
