Book Review: Septimus Heap #2

Flyte

By Angie Sage

We got this book from the local library! It's been well read...and well "loved" by the readers. I'm glad Kirsten put in the request for us.

Melody

Simon, Simon, Simon...please see the light. The second book in the Septimus Heap series did not disappoint. It was a real page turner. I didn't want to put it down and was always running short of reading time in school and at home. I do wish Jenna could see everything in the secret room. Looking forward to book 3.

Haley

Loving this series. Jenna is an awesome heroine.
She's really learning how to stand up for herself and be strong. I think she will make a really good queen. Simon needs help. Stanley needs to be less fidgety, but I guess that goes along with being a rat.

Kaya

Nicko is a wonderful brother. I'm glad Jenna and Septimus have him. This part of Septimus's story flew by. I can't believe how well the action moved along seamlessly. While I wish the Heaps listened to Jenna and Septimus in the beginning, if they had neither Jenna nor Septimus would have grown stronger. That's what they call literary devices for character development.

Kirsten

Shouldn't an ExtraOrdinary Wizard be on alert for all things and learning something every day? Ms. Python Shoes disappoints me with how she is oblivious to the Darke around her and how she brushes off Septimus's and Alther's warnings. She's a bit full of herself. I really liked how Septimus and Nicko worked together throughout this book. Spit Fyre is awesome and I can't wait to see where his story goes.

Lanie

All of us were able to read this book before we needed to send it back to the library. Quite a feat. The writing was fluid and the action flowed along in such a way that none of us wanted to put the book down. There is more to this "city" than meets the eye. I think those tunnels will be visited again or we may be introduced to new ones.  Sleuth was cool. I'd like to have one, but a light one - if they exist.

Xyra's Review

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Well, I was right to worry about Simon. But before I go too far into that part of the story...the second installment of the Septimus Heap series is really good. Well written, flowed well, with action and description to keep most readers happy (there is always someone you can't please).

In Flyte, Septimus and Jenna grew stronger in the knowledge of who they are and who they will be. Their relationship has gained an additional bond that I am very interested in seeing develop.

I was rather disappointed in the adults not believing Septimus and am glad he found a confidante in brother Nicko. I am also glad that the two of them stepped up to the challenge...well, that would be a spoiler.

The quest devise is quite prevalent in this book. There are ups and downs for everyone along the way. Very interesting action during the quest sequences.

Simon...I'd say "poor Simon" but he is bringing all his misfortune on himself. He kind of reminds me of a young Anikan Skywalker slowly morphing into Darth Vader. He is hard headed and hardhearted. Part of me hopes he can turn around and be re-accepted by his family.

The one character's name is quite unfortunate - Rupert Gringe. As this book was published in 2006, someone in the editorial staff should have persuaded the author to change it. Unless her intention was for readers to think of actor Rupert Grint every time they read the character's name (which is what I did).

I do not like DomDaniel and fear this is not the last we have seen of his bones.

I do like Sleuth, even though he is Darke.

Spit Fyre is a riot!

It was hard to put this book down. I'd start reading and the chapters would fly by, so would the time. I do think I will love this series.

Mini Adventure #11

Dairy Queen

Felicity, Holly, Rebecca, 2 or more

This is awesome!
Snack time from Dairy Queen!
And Orange Julius.
Love it!
(laughing)
What did you get, Holly?
I went super strawberry with a strawberry julius and a strawberry blizzard with chocolate pieces.
Nice! What about you, Felicity?
(sipping shake) Oh, yum! I have a chocolate shake and a strawberry sundae.
Tasty.
Rebecca what did you end up ordering?
(smiling broadly) I have a blue raspberry arctic rush and hot fudge sundae.
All good choices!
(giggling they resume eating)

Do you have Dairy Queen where you live? Or maybe something like it? What is your favorite treat when you are there?

The Treats

The delicious looking treats are from miWorld, the DQ Treat Set to be exact. The collector pack includes all six treats and a sticker sheet. They are perfectly sized for the mini dolls. The pack was a little over $3 with tax from Target, but check your favorite toy section for these cute packs. note: I'm pretty sure we learned about miWorld from Madelon either on Living a Dolls Life or Karen Mom of Three.

Best wishes,

Under the Weather

Lanie's Day Off

It's no fun to be sick during the spring. Even worse to need a day off from school at the end of the year. (sighs) But sometimes it just can't be helped. That was my yesterday..., but I'm much better now.

Morning

I woke up and my tummy didn't feel quite right. So my sisters headed off to school and I went to work with Xyra. (No fever or any other icky symptoms - you know the ones I mean - so it was okay to be around others, but not school, just in case.) We started the day with Joseph Wesley black tea 04 - plain. It was really good. warm and soothing with a good flavor that is not too rich or spicy. I had some plain toast too. Then we headed out.

Sadly, my second cup of tea for the day was not Joseph Wesley 04, but a regular bag tea. Not nearly as tasty plain. But okay to sip while reading a back issue of Doll Mag. (The link doesn't go to this specific issue, but the latest post. If you want this issue, click here.)
I read it cover to cover twice. Then I watched the world go by outside the window.

Nap Time

Man, your brain is just not firing right when your tummy is off. I forgot my laptop. With no TV or computer I got drowsy and decided to take a nap.
Of course, I didn't think about bringing my orange monkey, but Xyra had a cute puppy as a substitute. A larger blanket would have been nice, but this worked well.

Lunch

My nap was really long and when I woke up I had a late lunch of soup and tea.
The soup was really good. That fact meant I was on the mend, so I added a tiny bit of sugar to the tea.

Today

All is well today and I was back at school with the others. So very happy not to miss two beautiful spring days. (giggling) Although, who can focus on days like this? I did start the day with another cup of Joseph Wesley 04, I can see this becoming a routine. :-)

What comfort foods or beverages do you like when you aren't 100%?

See you again soon,

Lanie Checks the Garden

Tomatoes?

Hi! I know Kirsten told you I have been spending a lot of time in the garden. All the plants and flowers are getting really big. So far we only have one vegetable plant. It's a Juliet tomato plant. I went to check it the other day.

Or Not?

Oh, no! Juliet is bent. The wind must have been too strong for her. Maybe if I prop her up and water her she will get strong.
I'll use this moss to keep her close to the support and to keep the moisture in.
Keep your fingers crossed.

Garden Decor

After checking on Juliet I went to see the additions to another section. We have a few statues or decorations we put out from spring to fall. The little hedgehog looks nice among the lilies of the valley.
Relaxing in a mossy spot you'll find a bunny with a butterfly on its belly. That is one confident bunny!
Another bunny hides in more ways than one.

Do you have any decorations in your gardens? Gazing balls, birdbaths, lights, wind chimes, etc.?

See you again soon,

Iced Tea Review: The Repbulic of Tea

The Republic of Tea: Ginger Peach

Spring has sprung forward right to summer, but I know it won't last long. However, in the meantime the higher temperatures remind me it is time to start brewing iced tea! Fresh brewed is almost always better than canned or bottled. You can control the strength and sweetness.

There are lots of ways to brew your own iced tea. Today I'm going to use our Mr. Coffee Iced Tea Maker. Most of the instructions are on the pitcher.
Fill water to the water line and pour into the tower.
Then add ice to the ice line. Oops! We don't have enough ice.
Oh, well. You just add water to the ice. We like our tea unsweetened. If we liked it sweet I would have added sugar to the ice too.

Now for the tricky part...adding the tea. Today I am using The Republic of Tea Ginger Peach.
We've found that using 4 tea bags when making 2 quarts of iced tea provides a full body tea without being too strong. I'll put the tea bags in blue filter chamber. Now the pot goes under the tower, I press the button, and off we go!

It's fun to watch the dark tea mix with the water and ice.
The ice melts pretty quickly too.

Done! For this part I need help. The top or filter chamber is steaming.
Xyra, will you remove the blue filter chamber.
Of course. Ow, ow, ow! Yikes, that's hot!
Thank you.
You're welcome.
While the filter part is really hot, the tea in the pitcher is cold and ready to drink.
It smells fabulous! The peach aroma is strongest, but the ginger gives it a little edge. It has a nice dark amber color. So grab your favorite glass and pour.
Doesn't it look refreshing?

Yum! I love ginger peach iced tea.
Fruity and spicy (not like pepper) and exotic. Very smooth and refreshing. The peach even sweetens the tea without needing extra sugar. Perfect for a hot day.

Have you ever tried ginger peach tea? What is your favorite refreshing drink during the spring and summer?

So glad you stopped. Come again soon!
